FOG
A town wrapped in tree-lined walls

Walk the walls of Lucca

Lucca is enclosed by intact Renaissance walls, wide enough to carry a tree-lined promenade all the way around the town. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the walls draw a perfect ring for the streets inside.

On the walls

The walls of Lucca are among the best preserved in Europe, with broad ramparts topped by a tree-lined path of about four kilometres. Walkers, runners and cyclists circle the town on it, with bastions offering small parks and views over the rooftops.

A full lap on the walls is the obvious first walk, and it outlines the town exactly. After that, the job is filling the inside.

Inside the town

The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro follows the oval shape of a Roman amphitheatre, with houses built into its outline. The Via Fillungo is the main shopping street, running past the Torre delle Ore, a clock tower that can be climbed.

The Guinigi Tower has oak trees growing on its roof. San Michele in Foro stands on the site of the old forum with a tall white facade, and the Cathedral of San Martino lies to the south. Puccini's birthplace is near San Michele.

Flat and fast

Lucca is flat and compact, so the whole old town can be cleared in a day of walking. Summers are hot, but the walls are well shaded.

The Serchio river lies just north of the town, with riverside paths for longer walks.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Lucca, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
