More than one leaning tower

Walk Pisa beyond the tower

Most visitors see the leaning tower and leave, but Pisa is a lively university town of riverside palaces and quiet squares. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the rest of Pisa is easy to fill.

The field of miracles

The Piazza dei Miracoli holds the cathedral, the baptistery, the Camposanto and the leaning bell tower, all in white marble on a green lawn in the north west corner of the old town. Sections of the medieval walls that border it can be walked on top.

From there, head south east through quieter streets to the Piazza dei Cavalieri, the square of the Knights, home to the Scuola Normale Superiore. Borgo Stretto, an arcaded shopping street, leads down to the river.

Along the Arno

The Arno curves through the city, lined with palaces on both banks. The lungarni, the river streets, make an easy loop: walk along one side and back along the other, crossing the Ponte di Mezzo in the middle.

On the south bank, the tiny Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina sits right on the river. The Corso Italia leads from the river south to the station, as the main shopping street.

Flat and quick

Pisa is flat and small, so the whole old town fills in a day. Summers are hot and the squares have little shade.

The best map is made away from the tower, in the student streets and along the river.

What the app adds to a walk

The ledger tracks the area you have unfogged, the distance you have covered and your share of the whole Earth. Ranks climb with area, from Fogbound and Wanderer up through Scout, Pathfinder and Explorer to Atlas. The collection fills with the countries, regions and cities you have actually stood in, and nothing else can add to it.

Everything stays on the phone: no account, no cloud, no app analytics, no ads. If you already have years of Google Timeline or GPX history, FOG Unlimited can import it, a single purchase rather than a subscription, so Pisa walks you took before installing appear on the map the same day.
