Walk Siena through its contrade
Siena is a red brick hill town spread over three ridges, meeting at a shell-shaped square. It is divided into seventeen contrade, each with its own streets and colours. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and every contrada is a patch to clear.
The Campo and the Duomo
The Piazza del Campo slopes down like a shell toward the Palazzo Pubblico and the slender Torre del Mangia, which can be climbed. Twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August, the Palio horse race is run around its edge.
Up the hill, the Duomo is striped in black and white marble. Beside it stands the Facciatone, the unfinished wall of a planned expansion, which you can climb for a view over the rooftops.
Three ridges
The city spreads along three ridges, with the Banchi di Sopra, the Via di Citta and the Banchi di Sotto as the main streets. Each contrada has its own church, fountain and symbol, shown on street plaques. Following those plaques is a good way to work the side streets.
In the north west, the Basilica of San Domenico looks across a valley to the Duomo, and the Fortezza Medicea has a walk along its walls. Below San Domenico, the Fonte Branda is a medieval public fountain in a valley.
Up and down
Siena is steep, with steps and narrow lanes, and much of the centre is closed to cars. Walking here means climbing.
Summers are hot. The Palio days are packed, and most walks slow to a crawl.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Siena clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
