Walk Maastricht on both banks of the Maas
Maastricht, in the far south of the Netherlands, has squares full of cafes, medieval walls and even a hill, rare in this flat country. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and both banks of the Maas are close enough to fill in one go.
Squares and walls
The Vrijthof is the main square, with the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the Sint-Janskerk with its red tower. The Onze Lieve Vrouweplein is a smaller, leafy square with its own basilica.
In the south, the Helpoort is the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands, and stretches of the medieval walls run beside the Jeker in the Jekerkwartier. The Boekhandel Dominicanen is a bookshop inside a former Gothic church.
River and hill
The Sint Servaasbrug, an old stone bridge, crosses the Maas to Wyck on the east bank, with its own streets of shops. The Ceramique district, south of Wyck, is a modern area by the river.
South of the centre, the Sint Pietersberg is a hill with Fort Sint Pieter on top and a network of old marl tunnels inside, visited on guided tours. The walk up gives a view over the river and the city.
Gentle ground
Maastricht is mostly flat, with the hill as a mild challenge. Cobbles are common in the old town.
Weather is mild and damp, and the city is busy during carnival.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Maastricht clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
