Walk Utrecht along the Oudegracht
Utrecht has a medieval centre with canals unlike any other, where old cellars open onto wharves at the water's edge. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the canals give you two levels of paths to clear.
The Dom and the canals
The Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at over 110 metres, stands in the middle of the old city, separate from the church it once belonged to. You can climb it for a view over the whole centre.
The Oudegracht runs through the centre with wharves below street level, where the old cellars under the streets now hold cafes and restaurants beside the water. Walk the wharf level and then the street level above it for two parallel lines.
Around the ring
The Singel, a ring canal, encircles the old city, with parks along much of its length. Walk all the way around it, then work through the lanes inside, including the quiet streets of the museum quarter in the south.
Outside the centre, the Rietveld Schroder House, a landmark of modern architecture, stands on the eastern edge of the city. The Griftpark, to the north, is a large park on old industrial land.
Coverage
Utrecht is flat, compact and full of bicycles, so take care on the cycle paths. The centre fills quickly and the ring canal makes a neat outline.
The weather is mild and often damp.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Utrecht is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
