Walk Macau's historic centre

Macau mixes Portuguese squares and churches with Chinese temples on a small, hilly peninsula. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the historic centre is compact enough to clear in a day or two.

The historic centre

Senado Square is paved with wavy black and white stone mosaics in the Portuguese style, surrounded by pastel colonial buildings. From it, lanes climb to the Ruins of St Paul's, the stone facade of a church that burned in the nineteenth century, at the top of a broad flight of steps.

The historic centre, a World Heritage site, runs in a line of squares, churches and temples across the peninsula. Street signs are in Portuguese and Chinese.

Hills and temples

Guia Fortress, on the highest hill, has a lighthouse and a chapel with old frescoes. In the south, the A-Ma Temple, older than the city itself, climbs a hillside with incense coils hanging in its halls.

Across the bridges, Taipa Village has narrow streets of old houses, and Coloane has a quiet village and hiking trails. A day: Senado Square, St Paul's, the fortress, and south along the old streets to the A-Ma Temple.

Coverage

The peninsula is small and dense, with steep lanes, so it fills as a detailed web. The casino districts are large and built for traffic.

Summers are hot and humid, with typhoons in season. Autumn and winter are pleasant.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Macau, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
