Walk Nagasaki up its hillsides
Nagasaki is a harbour city in a valley of steep hills, long Japan's window to the outside world, with a Dutch trading post, a Chinatown and churches. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the hills here make every street a climb.
The old trading port
Dejima was a small artificial island where the Dutch traded during the centuries when Japan was closed to the outside world. Its buildings have been rebuilt and it is now a museum.
Shinchi Chinatown lies nearby. The Oura Church and the Glover Garden, a hillside of Western houses and gardens with views over the harbour, are a short walk south up the Dutch Slope.
The river and the peace park
Megane Bridge, the spectacles bridge, is a stone bridge over the Nakashima River whose two arches and their reflections look like a pair of glasses. Stone bridges cross the river all along it.
The Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum, in the north of the city, mark the site of the 1945 bombing. The hypocentre is a quiet park nearby.
Hills
Nagasaki is built on steep slopes around the harbour, with stairs and narrow lanes climbing between houses. Mount Inasa, across the harbour, has a ropeway and a famous night view.
The centre is compact, but the hills make walking slow and hard work.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Nagasaki is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
