FOG
A gold rush town of baroque churches

Walk Ouro Preto's steep streets

Ouro Preto is a Brazilian gold rush town of the eighteenth century, with baroque churches on every hill and cobbled streets that climb impossibly steeply. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and every street here is a climb.

The square

The Praca Tiradentes is the main square, on a ridge between two hills, with the Museu da Inconfidencia, the old town hall and jail, on one side.

The town is a World Heritage site, with colonial houses with coloured window frames along steep cobbled streets.

The churches

The Igreja de Sao Francisco de Assis, a short walk downhill from the square, was designed by Aleijadinho, the great sculptor of Brazilian baroque, with ceiling paintings by Mestre Ataide.

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar is covered in gold inside. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo stands near the square. Old gold mines can be visited on the edges of town.

Hills

Ouro Preto is extremely hilly, and the cobbles are slippery when wet. Wear good shoes.

The town is at about 1,150 metres, with cool nights. Mariana, another colonial town with its own baroque churches and a square of two facing churches, is a short trip east.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Ouro Preto, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
