FOG
A blue and white kasbah on the ocean

Walk Rabat from the Kasbah of the Udayas

Rabat is Morocco's capital, a calm city on the Atlantic with a blue and white kasbah, a medina and a great unfinished minaret. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the old city and the river make a neat first map.

The Kasbah and the medina

The Kasbah of the Udayas stands on a rock above the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, with lanes of blue and white houses, a gate and the Andalusian Gardens. A terrace at the top looks over the ocean.

The medina, below it, is smaller and quieter than in other Moroccan cities, with Rue des Consuls, a street of carpets and crafts.

The tower and the river

The Hassan Tower is the minaret of a mosque begun in the twelfth century and never finished, standing over a field of broken columns. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V stands beside it.

The Bou Regreg river has promenades along both banks. Chellah, a walled site of Roman and medieval ruins with storks nesting on the walls, is south of the centre.

Coverage

Rabat has a mild Atlantic climate. The city is flat in the centre, with wide avenues in the new town.

A day covers the kasbah, the medina, the tower and the river. Sale, the old town across the river, adds another medina.

Share the shape you walked

After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Rabat, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.

It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
