Walk Stuttgart up its stairways
Stuttgart sits in a basin surrounded by hills, vineyards and forest, and its slopes are climbed by hundreds of public stairways. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the stairs are the shortcuts that light up the hillsides.
The valley floor
The Schlossplatz is the central square, with the Neues Schloss and the Altes Schloss beside it. The Konigstrasse, a long pedestrian shopping street, runs from the main station to the south.
The Schlossgarten, a long chain of parks, runs from the centre north east toward the Rosenstein park and the Neckar. To the south east, the Bohnenviertel is a small old quarter of lanes and galleries.
Up the Staffeln
Stuttgart has many public stairways, called Staffeln, linking the streets of the valley with the residential slopes. Climbing them is a classic local walk. On the south west side, the Karlshohe is a hilltop park with a view over the basin.
To the north, the Killesberg park has a viewing tower, and the Weissenhof Estate, a modernist housing exhibition from 1927, is nearby. Further out, the Fernsehturm stands in the forest on the southern heights.
Hills and heat
The basin traps heat in summer, so walks up the slopes are hot. The stairs are steep, but give a lot of new ground for a small distance.
Winters are cool and sometimes snowy on the hills.
Background walking, private by design
FOG reveals the map with the screen off. Turn on background exploring and every street you cover in Stuttgart clears on its own, whether you were sightseeing or just walking back from the shops. On Android a notification stays up while it runs, so you always know it is on.
Your trail is processed and stored only on the device. There is no account and nothing is uploaded, ever. Export a GPX backup from Settings so the map survives a lost phone. Ranks, gear for your character and a monthly and yearly logbook all grow out of the same walking, and the basics are free.
