Walk Freiburg along the Bachle
Freiburg is a sunny university town on the edge of the Black Forest, with little water channels called Bachle running beside its streets. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the Bachle make the perfect guide through the old town.
Munster and old town
The Munster, the cathedral, has a tall openwork tower and stands on the Munsterplatz, where a market fills the square every morning except Sunday. Around it, the old town is threaded with Bachle, small channels of running water along the streets.
Two medieval gates survive: the Martinstor and the Schwabentor. The Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse is the main shopping street, and pavements across the centre are decorated with pebble mosaics. The Augustinerplatz is a popular evening gathering spot.
Schlossberg and the river
The Schlossberg rises directly above the old town, with paths, a cable car and a viewing tower on top. From there, the view takes in the town, the Black Forest and on clear days the hills across the Rhine.
The Dreisam river runs along the south side of the old town with a long riverside path. The Vauban district, to the south, is a car-reduced eco quarter that is interesting to walk through.
Sunshine and rain
Freiburg is one of the warmest and sunniest cities in Germany, though summer storms are frequent. The old town is flat, while the Schlossberg is a real climb.
