Castle ruins over the Neckar

Walk Heidelberg and the Philosophenweg

Heidelberg lies in the Neckar valley, an old university town below a famous red sandstone castle ruin, with a hillside path across the river. FOG covers the map until you walk it, and both banks of the valley are there to clear.

The old town

The Altstadt runs along the south bank of the Neckar, a long narrow strip between river and hill. The Hauptstrasse is its spine, a long pedestrian street from the Bismarckplatz to the Karlstor, passing the Marktplatz, the Heiliggeistkirche and the university buildings.

Above the old town, the castle ruin stands on the slope of the Konigstuhl. You can climb up by steps and paths, or take the Bergbahn, a funicular that continues higher up the mountain.

Across the river

The Alte Brucke, the old stone bridge with its gate towers, crosses the Neckar from the old town. On the far side, the Schlangenweg climbs in zigzags to the Philosophenweg, a path along the hillside with the best views of the castle and the old town.

A classic loop: the Hauptstrasse, the castle, back down to the river, across the Alte Brucke, along the Philosophenweg and down to the Theodor Heuss bridge to return.

Valley and hills

The old town is flat but narrow, and the hillsides on both sides are steep. Allow time for climbs.

Heidelberg has mild weather by German standards, and spring comes early on the sunny Philosophenweg.

The character who walks with you

FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.

Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Heidelberg is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
