Walk Taichung through its parks
Taichung is Taiwan's second largest city, with long green parkways, an opera house, a famous night market and an old station district. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the green corridors draw long lines across it.
The greenway
The Calligraphy Greenway is a long strip of park through the west of the city, with paths, art and cafes on both sides. It connects the National Museum of Natural Science to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
The National Taichung Theater, an opera house designed by Toyo Ito with walls of flowing curves, sits in the new district to the west, near the Taichung Metropolitan Park and City Hall.
Old Taichung
The old Taichung station, a red brick building from the Japanese period, stands beside the new elevated one. Nearby, Miyahara, an old eye clinic turned into an ice cream shop with ornate interiors, is a famous stop. The Green Canal and Liuchuan canal have been restored with paths.
Taichung Park, with a lake and a pavilion, is the old central park of the city.
Night markets
Fengjia Night Market, by Feng Chia University in the west, is one of the biggest in Taiwan. Yizhong Street, near Taichung Park, has another.
Taichung has a mild climate and sunnier weather than the north of Taiwan. The city is spread out, so focus on the greenway and the old centre.
