Walk Tangier's medina and kasbah
Tangier sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, with a whitewashed medina climbing to a kasbah that looks across the water to Spain. FOG starts the map dark and clears only what you walk, and the medina is a tangle of lanes to fill.
The medina
The Grand Socco, a large square, is the gateway to the medina. Inside, the lanes lead down to the Petit Socco, a small square of cafes that was the heart of the city's international era.
The American Legation, the first property owned by the United States abroad, is now a museum in the medina.
The Kasbah
The Kasbah sits at the top of the medina, with the old sultan's palace, now the Kasbah Museum, and viewpoints over the Strait. On clear days the coast of Spain is visible.
Below the Kasbah, the Cafe Hafa, a cafe of terraces over the sea, has been open since the 1920s.
The new town and the bay
The new town has the Boulevard Pasteur, with the Terrasse des Paresseux, a viewpoint over the port. The seafront promenade runs along the bay to the east, a long line by the beach.
Tangier is mild, with wind from the Strait. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are a short drive west.
