Pink brick on the Garonne

Walk Toulouse, the pink city

Toulouse is built almost entirely of rose coloured brick, set along a wide bend of the Garonne with a canal looping round its east side. FOG covers the map until you walk it, so every brick lane you take comes out of the dark.

The brick core

The Place du Capitole is the heart of Toulouse, a huge square in front of the city hall with a cross of the Occitan flag set into its paving. North of it, the Basilique Saint-Sernin is one of the largest Romanesque churches in Europe, its octagonal brick tower visible from far off.

South and west, the old town is a tangle of narrow streets with merchant mansions such as the Hotel d'Assezat, and the Couvent des Jacobins with its palm tree vaulting. Rue d'Alsace-Lorraine and Rue Saint-Rome carry most of the shopping traffic.

River and canal

The Garonne quays run below the old town, with the Pont Neuf crossing to the Saint-Cyprien district on the left bank and the Prairie des Filtres, a riverside lawn where people gather on summer evenings. The Daurade quay is the classic sunset spot.

A long day loop: the Capitole, Saint-Sernin, down to the quays, over the Pont Neuf and back by the Pont Saint-Pierre, then east through the Jardin des Plantes and the Grand Rond to the Canal du Midi, whose towpath is lined with plane trees.

Flat ground, hot summers

Toulouse is flat and compact inside its boulevards, so the centre fills quickly once you work the side streets. The metro makes it easy to start a walk in an outer district and walk home.

Summers are hot, often well above 30 degrees, and the brick holds the heat into the evening. Spring and autumn are the best walking seasons.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Toulouse clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
