Walk the Ecusson of Montpellier
Montpellier wraps its medieval core, the Ecusson, around a hill, with grand eighteenth century promenades on one side and a neoclassical new quarter on the other. FOG keeps the city dark until you walk it, and the Ecusson alleys clear one twist at a time.
Inside the Ecusson
The old town takes its name from its outline, roughly shaped like a shield. It is mostly pedestrian, a maze of narrow streets, small squares and stone mansions with hidden courtyards, climbing gently toward the Saint-Pierre Cathedral with its two huge columns in front of the porch.
The Place de la Comedie, with its opera house and fountain of the Three Graces, is the main gathering point on the eastern edge. The Esplanade Charles de Gaulle runs north from it with trees and cafes.
Promenades and new quarters
At the western end of the Ecusson, an Arc de Triomphe leads to the Promenade du Peyrou, a raised terrace with a statue of Louis XIV and a water tower fed by the Saint-Clement aqueduct, whose arches you can follow on foot. The Jardin des Plantes nearby is the oldest botanical garden in France.
East of the Comedie, the Antigone district is a long axis of neoclassical housing that runs down to the river Lez, with paths along the water. A full loop of the Ecusson, the Peyrou, the aqueduct and Antigone fills a dense block of the map.
Heat and light
Summers are hot and very sunny, and the stone squares reflect it. Walk early or late, and use the shaded Ecusson streets at midday.
The sea is about ten kilometres away, so the beaches are a separate trip rather than part of a city walk.
The character who walks with you
FOG puts a small explorer called Wander on your position. Pick one of five paths (two are free, three come with FOG Unlimited) and every two levels on a path hands you a new piece of gear, earned only by the ground you cover. Twenty five pieces in all, and none of them can be bought.
Under the character it is a plain, permanent record: every street you walk in Montpellier is cleared and stays clear, the app works in the background, and the map is stored only on your phone with no account and no cloud. You can export it as GPX at any time.
