The Markt
The Markt is the main square, with the Nieuwe Kerk at one end and the city hall at the other. The Nieuwe Kerk is the burial place of the Dutch royal family, and its tower can be climbed.
Not far away, the Oude Kerk has a visibly leaning tower and is where Vermeer is buried. The Prinsenhof, opposite, is where William of Orange was assassinated in 1584, and is now a museum.
Canals and gates
Canals such as the Oude Delft run through the centre, lined with old houses and bridges. The Vermeer Centrum tells the story of the painter.
In the east, the Oostpoort is the only surviving city gate, a pair of towers on the water. The Royal Delft pottery works are on the edge of town, and TU Delft has a large campus to the south.
Small and flat
Delft is small and flat, easy to walk in a few hours. Bicycles are everywhere.
The weather is mild and often wet. A good loop: the Markt and the Nieuwe Kerk, along the Oude Delft past the Oude Kerk and the Prinsenhof, east to the Oostpoort, and back along the canals on the other side of the centre.
