FOG
A walled town at the end of a fjord-like bay

Walk Kotor and climb its walls

Kotor is a tiny walled town at the innermost end of the Bay of Kotor, with fortifications that zigzag straight up the mountain behind it. FOG hides the map until you walk it, and the climb draws one of the most dramatic lines you will ever clear.

The old town

The old town is a small triangle of stone lanes and squares, enclosed by walls and entered through the Sea Gate on the waterfront. The Cathedral of St Tryphon is the main church, and smaller churches and palaces fill the squares.

Cats are everywhere, a much loved part of the town. The lanes are confusing at first, but the town is so small that you will soon cover all of them.

Up the walls

The fortifications climb steeply up the mountain behind the town to the fortress of San Giovanni, with the small Church of Our Lady of Remedy part of the way up. The path is a long series of steps and ramps, with views over the bay improving at every turn.

From the bay, the Ladder of Kotor, an old switchback trail, climbs higher into the mountains. Along the shore, the waterfront path runs out toward Dobrota.

Heat and crowds

Summers are hot, and the wall climb has little shade, so go early. Cruise ships can fill the old town at midday.

The old town is flat, the walls very steep.

Bring the walks you already did

An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Kotor clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.

From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
