Walk Tirana from Skanderbeg Square
Tirana is a fast-changing capital with painted buildings, a vast central square and a former mausoleum turned public pyramid. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and Tirana's lively streets fill fast.
The centre
Skanderbeg Square is a huge open square, with the National History Museum and its mosaic facade, the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the clock tower. The Pazari i Ri, the new bazaar, is a renovated market area a short walk east.
Bunk'Art 2 is a former Cold War bunker near the square, now a museum. The Lana river runs through the centre, with paths along its banks.
Pyramid, Blloku and park
The Pyramid of Tirana was built as a museum for the former communist leader and has been renovated with steps up its sides that you can climb. South of it, the Blloku was once a restricted area for party officials and is now full of cafes and bars.
Further south, the Grand Park has an artificial lake with a path around it. On the eastern edge of the city, the Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs to Mount Dajti.
Hot and busy
Tirana is mostly flat and compact. Summers are hot, and traffic is heavy, so pedestrian streets and parks are welcome.
Winters are mild but rainy. A good first walk: Skanderbeg Square and the bazaar, south along the Lana to the Pyramid, through the Blloku and round the lake in the Grand Park, then back up the main boulevard.
The character who walks with you
