Walk Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor
Siem Reap is a small riverside town at the gate of the Angkor temples, and the temples themselves are enormous walking sites. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and a day inside Angkor draws a remarkable shape.
The town
Siem Reap is centred on the Old Market and Pub Street, with the Siem Reap river running through town and shaded paths along its banks. The town is small and flat.
Night markets and restaurants fill the streets around the Old Market in the evening.
Angkor
Angkor Wat lies a few kilometres north, the largest religious monument in the world, surrounded by a moat. Walking its galleries and terraces covers a lot of ground. A pass is required to enter the archaeological park.
Angkor Thom, beyond it, is a walled city with the Bayon temple and its stone faces at the centre, plus terraces and smaller temples to walk between. Ta Prohm, with trees growing through the ruins, is nearby. Visitors usually travel between the main sites by tuk-tuk or bicycle and walk inside each one.
Heat
It is hot all year, very hot from March to May. Start at sunrise, carry water and rest in the middle of the day.
The temple sites appear on the map as large, intricate patches, a striking contrast with the simple grid of the town.
Bring the walks you already did
An empty map is a slow start in a city you already know. FOG Unlimited imports Google Timeline exports and GPX files, so years of past walks in Siem Reap clear straight onto the map, and you open the app to a real picture with obvious dark gaps in it. It is one purchase, never a subscription.
From then on FOG records by itself, with the app closed, and the trail never leaves the phone. No account, no ads, no tracking. The logbook writes a page for every month and year you were out, with the new ground and the new places you set foot in.
