Walk Split, inside Diocletian's Palace
Split grew inside the walls of a Roman emperor's palace, and people still live in it. FOG keeps the map dark until you walk it, and the palace lanes plus the forest hill next door make a varied map.
The palace
Diocletian's Palace was built around the year 300 as a retirement home for the Roman emperor. Over the centuries the town grew inside its walls, and today its courtyards and passages hold shops, homes and cafes. The Peristyle, the central court, is surrounded by columns, with the cathedral in the old mausoleum.
The lanes inside the palace are narrow and irregular, and they change level constantly, so mapping them takes patience.
The Riva and Marjan
The Riva, a broad waterfront promenade lined with palms, runs along the southern face of the palace. West of the old town, the Varos district climbs to Marjan, a forested hill park on a peninsula, with paths, viewpoints and small chapels.
A good day: the palace and its lanes, the Riva, through Varos, up and around Marjan, and down to the beaches on its far side. Bacvice, east of the port, is the town beach.
Coverage
The palace is small and fills quickly; Marjan adds long, winding forest lines. Summers are hot and very busy, spring and autumn excellent.
Many islands are a ferry ride away, each a new patch to clear.
Share the shape you walked
After a proper walk FOG can offer a walk card: the shape of the route you just covered in Split, ready to post as a square, a story or the bare shape. The lifetime card shows the area you have unfogged, the distance travelled and how much of the city you have lit.
It all runs on your phone with no account and no cloud. Choose kilometres in Settings, pick a fog colour (Midnight, Abyss, Violet, Ember or Slate) and a density, and walk. Exploring is free, and one purchase of FOG Unlimited opens every rank, every path and Google Timeline and GPX import.
